- Abstract
- Quantitative aspects for electrochemical preparation and subsequent characterization of a functional polymer, poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene), have been studied using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance experiments along with transient electrochemical experiments, and the results are reported. The polymer was prepared with a reasonably high current yield of 25-70% by electrochemically oxidizing a monomer, 1,5-diaminonaphthalene, in acidic aqueous media. The polymer thus prepared had at least two chemically different amine groups, primary and secondary, and primary amines formed complexes effectively with a few metal ions. Evidences for the different types of amine groups and for the complexation reaction are presented. The major ions exchanged during doping-dedoping reactions were found to be the hydronium ions in a strongly acidic solution, while the counter anions were being exchanged at higher pHs, due to different basicities of the two different amine groups.
