Abstract
In flat rolling, wavy surfaces are easily formed in the strip, causing the problem of poor flatness. The wavy surfaces may not only reduce the commercial value of the product but also lead to the breakage of the strip while passing through the roll gap. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly control the wave formation. In this paper, we present a new approach to the prediction of the wavy shape of the strip. The approach is based on minimization of the total potential energy and adopts Ritz method as a solution technique. The approach is described in detail, with emphasis on the procedure to treat the effect of the total tension on the shape of the formed waves. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with predictions from the finite element method. Then, demonstrated is the model’s capability of reproducing various wavy surfaces that may be observed in the flat rolling mill.
